Activity during World War Two :

Sam Pollock is my father who is deceased. He died in 1995 and he did not talk about his World War II experiences hardly at all. Which I understand is not unusual. I am, therefor, entering information from his Separation Report & the little information I do know. arrived European Theater Sept. 30, 1944. He was a Marksman & Sharpshooter. I know he was in a battle in or near the Oberfelsberg, Germany. My father faced off against a tank & it's guides. He took out one guide with rifle fire then his MI jammed and he stood his ground & he tossed a grenade, taking out the rest of the ground troops. The tank was forced to retreat. My fathers action was a contrib- uting factor in the fall of Oberfelsberg Dec. 1, 1944. He was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action. Then I do not know what other battles he was involved in, but I do know on Dec. 14, 1944 he was wounded by machine gun fire from a German soldier. He lay among the rest of his comrades dead bodies for many hours. There was a Medic who kept coming back to see if my father was still alive & each time he would sneak a peak from behind trees, my father would move just his little finger so the Medic would know he was alive but not draw attention from German soldiers all around him still fighting. After a while the Medic took a chance and sprinted out to my father & asked "I'll carry you out, do you think you can hold on to me?" My father said hell yes & this brave Medic toss my father on his back & carried him to behind the lines. My father never got the name of this wonderful man & was never able to thank him for saving his life. My father arrived in Paris, France and had his first surgery on 12/25/1944. He arrived state side on May 15, 1945. His Separation date is July 31, 1945. Besides the Silver Star, he was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Battle Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Middle Eastern European Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal & later a World War II Victory Medal. He was my hero and I am very proud of his service & record. sept
