Harold E. Cadwallader received basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas, assigned to Hqts. Co., 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Div., Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Applied and approved for attendance at Officer Candidate School, Ft. Benning, Ga. Commissioned 2nd Lt. Infantry, June 5, 1942, assigned to 378th Inf. Regt., 95th Div., Camp Swift, Texas. Served as a Rifle Co. Commander and engaged in various training missions (1942-1944) including Louisana Maneuvers, Personal Defense, Desert Training, Mountain Climbing and Operations. Went to Europe June 1944, and served in General Patton's Third Army. Fought in France, Belgium (including Battle of Bulge), Holland, and Germany. Promoted to Regimental Information and Training staff position Jan. 1945. Attended special staff school in Paris. Investigated and prepared detailed reports for the Regt. Commander dealing with problems of morale, training, command, court martial, accidents, return to the USA, deactivation, reassignment, and discharge from active duty. Transferred from active duty and joined Army Reserve Dec. 1945. Major awards: ETO ribbon with three battle stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Distinguished Unit Citation with Cluster, and Commendation Medal.
