Born in Canada in 1919, he moved with his family to the United States in 1924 and joined the US Army on 11 May 1944. On his third day in occupied France, he was severely wounded (resulting in partial paralysis) by a German sniper during the Battle of Metz. He had many surgeries in England and the United States, but his condition deteriorated and he died on 25 January 1955. He was survived by his young son, one sister, and one brother.
