Unité : Company B, 377th Infantry Regiment

Grade : Staff Sergeant   Staff Sergeant

Activité pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale :

Crossed Moselle River on morning of Nov. 8. Before daylight the Germans had released water from dam upriver, I was cut off from the rest of the unit by high water, took refuge in farmhouse with three injured American G.I.'s in barn. Captured by Germans Nov. 14, sent by railcar to P.O.W. Camp 2B in Stetin, Poland, unconscious until January. In April, Germans marched us to near Hamburg Germany. British liberated us in May. Taken back to U.S. for recovery at Ashford General Hospital in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia. I don't have memory of much of the P.O.W. time because of severe malnutrition, and I suffered severe frostbite from the cold, nearly lost both feet. The doctors said that the march was the reason that I kept enough circulation to avoid amputation.
